Environment in Longtown

Longtown's position on the banks of the River Esk ensures that the town is well know to fishermen and those who enjoy the world of nature.

The Esk is internationally renowned for salmon and sea-trout.
It sweeps down from the Border Hills into the Solway Firth, an area of outstanding natural beauty and a favoured wintering ground for thousands of migratory birds.

A network of quiet lanes and old Drove Roads make the entire district ideal cycling country. The Reiver Route - a nationally recognised cycle tour - runs through it.

Footpaths and bridleways through glorious woodlands and the surrounding countryside are a delight for walkers or those on horseback.

The rolling hills of the Border and the Hadrian's Wall path are close by.
If you are travelling from Lands End to John o'Groats on four wheels, two wheels or on foot, Longtown makes for an ideal stopping off point.
