Ancient Parish of Arthuret
This is Arthuret, ancient parish and historic heart of Longtown. With it's name derived from the Old Welsh 'Ardderyd' it is believed by many to be the burial place of King Arthur and the site of the great battle of Ardderyd (AD573) at which Merlin went mad.
Long before kingdoms called England and Scotland existed, Arthuret was honoured in the heroic poems of the Celtic Bards of Britain.
Entwined forever with the greatest of British legends, it stands within the ancient Kingdom of Rheged, at the head of the Solway Firth close to Hadrian's Wall a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
