Bewcastle

Bewcastle, a place of wild beauty and is the most northerly parish in Cumbria.

It is here the Romans built their uniquely hexagonal fort ‘Fanum Cocidii’ linked directly to Birdoswald on Hadrian's Wall by the Maiden Way.

Bewcastle with its ruined Bewes or Beuth's Castle is associated closely with the violent days of Anglo-Scottish conflict and the Border Reivers.

The little church is dedicated to Cuthbert, the great saint of the Northern English. At the height of his cult Cuthbert once Bishop of Lindisfarne, was second only to Thomas A Becket as the most venerated of English saints.

Within the churchyard stands the magnificent 7th century world famous Bewcastle Cross, and an attractive heritage centre.
