Warlord Gwenddoleu
In the Mabinogion, a collection of early Welsh tales at first transmitted via an oral tradition and only written down much later, Gwenddoleu is said to be keeper of the Gwyddbwyll Board, one of the so-called Thirteen Treasures of Celtic Britain.
This 'magical' chess board symbolised the very land of Britain, so it is probable that Gwenddoleu held the Sovereignty of (at least) this part of Britain at the time of the Battle of Ardderyd.
Scholars believe that the local postal address 'Carwinley' is a corruption of the celtic name Caer Gwenddoleu - the fort or 'city' of Gwenddoleu thus identifying the massive earthwork at Liddel Strength as the great chieftan's stronghold.
