Historical Longtown
Longtown stands on the banks of the Border Esk just seven miles North of Carlisle. It is one of the finest examples of an 18th Century Planned Town in England and enjoys conservation status.
It has been chosen to benefit from government funding under the Market Towns Initiative programme that aims to revitalise certain market towns.
This scheme covers the town's historic 'home' parish of Arthuret and twelve neighbouring parishes that lie in the unspoilt surounding coutryside. ie....Arthuret, Askerton, Beaumont, Bewcastle, Hethersgill, Kingmoor, Kirkandrews-on-Esk, Kirklinton, Nicholforest, Rockcliffe, Solport, Stapleton & Westlinton.
All have a story to tell. Throughout history, Longtown's
strategic location on the western borders of England and Scotland has ensured that kings, princes and their warriors passed this way
