Bonnie Prince Charlie
When Prince Charles Edward Stuart 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' and his Jacobite army crossed the river and invaded England in 1745, Longtown was back in the wars again.
The highland army's passage through the town was graphically recorded in the diary of the Rev.George Williamson, then curate at Arthuret church.
The next year, they were back again as the Jacobites retreated into Scotland across the fords of the Esk. Thus, Longtown has the unique distinction of being the last English town ever to be occupied by a rebel army.
The famous Scottish ballad, "Wi' a hundred pipers an' a' an a'" by Lady Nairn commemorates the highlanders retreat across the Esk.
